• The thresholds are set through a set of statistical analyses that are informed by the percentage of pupils in the national cohort that achieved the national standard at KS2.

  • In maths, for example, 70% of pupils nationally achieved the new KS2 standard in 2016. In 2016, our maths thresholds, in simple terms, were set by asking the question ‘For 70% of the pupils that took the Testbase tests to achieve the maths standard, what would the threshold need to be?’   The sample of pupils who took the Testbase tests was sufficiently large by the time we set the thresholds to be confident of their validity. Because the Years 3, 4 and 5 tests were updated in 2017, new thresholds were set based on the national performance in 2017. This standard will be maintained for future years.

  • It is important to understand that there is a margin of error around the threshold of any test.  There may be small differences in the make-up of the population of pupils that took our tests compared with the KS2 tests. The Testbase tests are teacher marked rather than externally marked so there could be some variation because of that.  These reasons mean that teachers need to interpret the results of pupils around the threshold - so both below it and above it - with some caution.

  • It is therefore important that you combine the results from our tests with your own professional judgements from the classroom to ensure the most valid and reliable results for your pupils.
